West Haven Recreation will be offering modified camp programs at several locations this summer. We will be following the Youth Camp Guidance for Covid -19 issued by the State of CT Department of Early Childhood.  Restrictions will limit many usual camp activities, and include many mitigations such as monitoring camper temperatures, frequent hand washing, and constant sanitization of contact points – particularly around restrooms.
    • Camp numbers will be limited, and campers will be separated into distinct groups of no more than 10 to minimize overall contact.  Siblings will need to be grouped together.
    • Camps will run Monday through Thursday.  No early drop-off, late pickup, or bus service will be available.
    • Camps will be cancelled on rain days
    • No pool or structured aquatic instruction is currently permissible.
    • Temperatures will need to be taken upon arrival, and must be at or below 99.9°.  Any camper not feeling well will have a sequestered area to be attended to while they wait for immediate pickup.  Should a camper fall ill and test positive for COVID-19, the entire contact group will need to be sent home for the session.
    • Staff will be required to wear masks and utilize proper PPE until those protocols are relaxed.
    • Recognizing the need for day care, Painter Park Day Camp will run from 9am to 4pm. Other camps at our traditional playground sites will operate from 9am to 1pm for those who prefer a shorter day.
We will be releasing specific information on registration, locations, and fees on Thursday, June 11 once the remaining tentative plans are finalized.  All programs will hold three session: July 6-17, July 20-31, and August 3-14.  We hope to see you soon!

  • SHORELINE OPENING - With Restrictions
Beaches, the shoreline boardwalk, and beach parking will be open as of Memorial Day weekend.  "During May and June, parking at all beach lots is for West Haven residents only and is limited to capacity levels that maintain a safe, reduced volume of visitors to the beaches and allows for the practicing of any applicable social distancing directives,” said Mayor Rossi.

A West Haven resident beach sticker, with the vehicle’s license plate number printed on it, is required to park in each lot and is only valid if affixed to the inside lower left corner of the vehicle’s windshield. If no sticker is present, the resident driver must show a valid driver’s license and registration, both of which must have the same city address.  Lots will have constable attendants daily.
    • The city plans to mail new resident beach stickers with the July tax bills.
    • For the boardwalk, people must maintain social distancing and wear face masks at all times. Social distancing includes staying at least 6 feet away from others.  No bicycles are allowed on the boardwalk until further notice.
    • Use of the boat launch is for West Haven residents only. Residents must comply with COVID-19 boating guidelines from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
All WHPR programs and registrations are currently suspended.  The office in Painter Park will be CLOSED to PUBLIC ACCESS, Mon.- Thur. with NO OFFICE HOURS ON FRIDAY until further notice. We will be available to answer any questions by phone call at 203 937-3651 or email us.  We will reschedule programs and reopen registrations when conditions allow. Please stay safe!

NEW OFFICE HOURS effective March 16 are 9am-5pm, M-TH (effective 3/26 until further notice) and summer office hours will be 8am-5pm(TBD).
